Closed-Back Headphones: What Sealing the Driver Does
A closed-back headphone seals the rear of the driver in a chamber. That gives you isolation in both directions and lets the driver pressurise the space against your ear, which is where the bass weight comes from. The cost is a trapped-air resonance the tuning has to manage, and it is what separates a good closed-back from a poor one.
What the seal does
Sealing the back of a driver changes two things at once.
It blocks sound in both directions. Outside noise is attenuated on the way in, and your music leaks far less on the way out. How much depends on the pad seal against your head far more than on the cup material.
It traps the rear wave. The air behind the diaphragm is now a spring. It pushes back, it stores and releases energy, and it has resonances of its own that were never in the recording.
Everything people like and dislike about closed-backs comes from one of those two facts.
What you gain
Isolation. The obvious one, and the reason the category exists. If anything in your environment has a vote, this is the design that answers it.
Bass weight. A sealed chamber lets the driver pressurise the volume between the diaphragm and your eardrum. That coupling supports the lowest frequencies in a way an open design cannot, and it is why closed-backs tend to deliver bass you feel as pressure rather than only hear as pitch.
Consistency across environments. Because the outside world is attenuated, a closed-back sounds much the same in a quiet room and a noisy one. An open-back does not.
No leakage into a microphone. For anyone recording, monitoring, or on calls, this is not a preference. It is the requirement.
What the seal costs
Chamber resonance. Trapped air resonates. In a poorly managed design this shows up as a boxy midrange, a bass that booms at one frequency instead of extending evenly, and a congested sense of space. Managing it is the central engineering problem of a closed-back, and it is handled with damping material, internal geometry, and controlled venting rather than eliminated.
A more inward presentation. Sealing your ears from the room removes the cues that make an open-back sound like it extends beyond your head. Good closed designs mitigate this; few match a good open-back on it.
Heat and pressure. Sealed pads trap warmth against the ear and can create a physical pressure sensation that some listeners find fatiguing over hours.
How to judge one
The seal is not optional. Closed-back performance depends on pad contact more than any other headphone type, and a broken seal takes the bass with it. Glasses, hair and pad wear all degrade it, and a pair that measured well on a coupler can lose its low end entirely on a real head with a poor fit.
Beyond that, listen for the specific failure modes the chamber creates: a one-note quality in the bass, a hollowness or honk in the lower midrange, and whether busy passages stay separated or collapse together. Those are the symptoms of an unmanaged chamber, and they are what distinguishes a well engineered closed-back from one that merely seals.
Choosing between closed and open
Choose closed when the environment participates: shared spaces, background noise, a microphone, or anyone within earshot. Choose open when you listen alone in a quiet room and want the widest, least coloured presentation available.
The comparison is a trade, not a ranking. A good closed-back in the room you actually listen in beats a better open-back you cannot use there.
