Soundstage: What Reviewers Mean and Where It Comes From

Soundstage is the perceived size and shape of the space a system reproduces: how wide, how deep, and how far outside your head it seems to extend. It is a perceptual result, not a specification, and it comes from the recording, the design of the transducer and the room in roughly that order.

Soundstage and imaging are not the same thing

The two get used interchangeably and they describe different properties.

Soundstage is the size and shape of the perceived space. Wide or narrow, deep or flat, inside your head or out beyond your ears.

Imaging is how precisely instruments are placed within that space. A system can have a large soundstage with vague placement, or a modest one with pinpoint accuracy. They vary independently, and conflating them is why two reviewers can describe the same headphone in apparently contradictory terms.

A third property, separation, describes how distinctly individual parts remain audible when the music gets busy. It correlates with imaging but is not identical to it.

Where it comes from

The recording, more than anything else. Spatial cues are encoded at the mixing desk: level and timing differences between channels, reverb, early reflections, and the microphone technique used. A close-mic'd, hard-panned studio recording contains a small amount of spatial information, and no system can reproduce what is not there. A well engineered live or orchestral recording contains a great deal. If you want to hear what your system can do spatially, the recording is the variable to change first.

Enclosure design. Open-back headphones consistently present a larger stage than closed ones. Two things contribute: no sealed chamber pressurising against the eardrum, and your ears still receiving some room cues rather than being sealed off from them. This is the most reliable single predictor for headphones.

Driver behaviour. Even response and controlled decay help. A resonance that rings after the signal stops smears the timing cues that placement depends on, which is why headphones described as "fast" or "clean" are often also described as well separated.

The room, for speakers. For loudspeakers the room is not a minor factor, it is most of the answer. Early reflections, speaker placement and listening position dominate perceived stage far more than the speakers themselves, which is why treatment and placement produce bigger changes than equipment swaps.

Why headphones sound "in your head"

With speakers, sound reaches each ear from a source out in the room, at a distance, filtered by the shape of your head and outer ear. Your brain uses those cues to place the source externally.

Headphones deliver each channel directly to one ear with none of those cues. The brain gets timing and level differences with no corresponding head-related filtering, and the most sensible interpretation available is that the sound originates inside your skull.

Open-back designs, careful driver angling, and crossfeed or binaural processing all attempt to give back some of the missing cues. They can move the stage outward noticeably. None of them fully replicates the experience of sound arriving from a real point in a real room.

Reading the word in a review

Treat soundstage claims as relative and comparative, never absolute. "Wide" is only meaningful against something, and the useful version names what it was compared against, on what recording, on what chain.

Be sceptical of a large soundstage described as an unqualified virtue. An artificially wide presentation is usually the result of a response dip in the upper midrange or an exaggerated treble, both of which buy apparent space at the cost of tonal accuracy. A stage that is large and correctly proportioned, with instruments in stable, believable positions, is the harder and more valuable achievement.
