Questions buyers ask
Which accessory should I buy first?
Acoustic treatment, in almost every case. It is the only category on this list that changes the sound at your listening position by an amount you can measure without instruments, because the room is doing more to your frequency response below 300 Hz than any component in the chain. Treatment is also the only one whose benefit does not depend on what the rest of your system already does well. Cables and power conditioning come after, and both do less.
Do speaker cables actually change anything?
Gauge and length do, measurably, and that is most of the story. A long run of thin cable into a low-impedance speaker adds series resistance in the path, which costs damping factor and a fraction of a decibel of level. Choose enough copper for the distance and the load and you have collected essentially all of the available benefit. Beyond that the differences get small quickly, which is why the cables on this list are scored on build, geometry and value rather than on claims about what they transform.
Is a power conditioner worth it if my mains is clean?
Depends what you mean by clean. A conditioner does two separable things: it filters high-frequency noise riding on the mains, and it manages how multiple components share a supply and a ground. If your system has an audible noise floor problem, particularly a hum or a hash you can hear between tracks, that is a real fault and worth fixing at the source. If it does not, a conditioner is insurance and convenience rather than an upgrade, and it should be priced accordingly in your head.
Why are the scores here not comparable to a DAC's score?
They are, and that is deliberate. Every score on this site is anchored to a published per-category reference list, so an 8.5 accessory and an 8.5 DAC both mean the unambiguous best at what they set out to do for what they cost. What that does not mean is equal effect on your system. An 8.5 cable is an excellent cable; it will still change less than a mediocre speaker swap. The score rates the product against its peers, not the size of the upgrade.
Accessories are the part of this hobby with the worst evidence-to-spending ratio, and pretending otherwise would make this guide useless. A great deal of what is sold as an upgrade is priced on belief rather than on effect, and the honest position is that the size of the change varies enormously between categories on this list.
So this guide is ordered by score, like every other list on the site, but it is worth reading with a second axis in mind: how much a given category can change at all. Acoustic treatment can move your in-room response by an amount that would be a scandal in any electronic component. A cable, chosen sensibly, collects most of its available benefit from gauge and length. Both can be excellent products; they are not the same size of decision.
What we tested for
Every accessory here spent at least two weeks in the reference chain, in the same room, against the same recordings used for every review in the catalogue. Where an accessory claims a specific mechanism, the listening was arranged to try to expose that mechanism rather than to confirm it.
Accessories also get one test that components do not: removal. A component is judged by what it does in the chain. An accessory is judged by what changes when it comes back out, after enough time that the novelty of installing it has worn off. That order matters, because the direction of an expectation is easiest to hear immediately after you have spent money.
Scoring uses the same four weights as everything else: tonality, technicalities, build and value against the rest of the catalogue at that price. Build carries more weight here than usual, because most of these products have no active parts and the entire proposition is materials, geometry and assembly.
The order that actually helps
If you are working through a system rather than shopping one item, the sequence below does more per pound than the reverse of it.
Treat the room first. Room modes below 300 Hz add and cancel by tens of decibels at a fixed listening position, and no cable, conditioner or component compensates for a null caused by where you sit. The room-mode calculator on this site will show you where yours land from three measurements.
Fix a noise floor problem second, if you have one. A humAudible low-frequency interference (usually 50Hz, 60Hz, or harmonics) caused by ground loops, induced AC fields, or transformer leakage. The most common form of "noise" in audio chains and often the easiest to track down., a hash between tracks, or noise that changes when other appliances switch is a real fault with a real cause. Benefits range from "obvious" to "imaginary" depending on the listener and the implementation. is for, and it is worth money when the problem exists.
Get cables right third, which mostly means getting them adequate. Enough gauge for the run, connectors that stay tight, and a length that suits the layout. That is the majority of the benefit available from cabling.
Everything after those three is refinement, and should be bought as refinement rather than as a fix.
What a score here does not promise
A high score on this list means the product is excellent against others of its own kind at its own price. It does not mean the change it makes is large, and this is the single most important thing to carry away from this page.
That distinction is why the guide is worth having at all. Plenty of accessory coverage elsewhere reports the size of an effect that would be remarkable if it were real, without ever saying what it was compared against or whether the comparison could have been reversed. What you get here is a product judged against its peers, a verdict that says how confident we are, and a page that will tell you when the honest answer is that the category itself does less than the marketing implies.
