How accessories reviews work on this site.
Every accessory review on this page covers a piece of the chain that is not a transducer or an amplifier - the cables, conditioners, stands, pads, isolation feet, and treatment that surround the gear. Accessories are easy to over-claim and hard to test honestly, so this category gets the same chain-and-listening discipline as transducers do: same room, same source, same reference, and an honest verdict when the accessory makes a difference and when it doesn't.
What we score in accessories
Measurable improvement
Where the accessory category supports it - cable resistance, capacitance, conditioner noise rejection, room treatment absorption coefficients - we use measurement first. If the spec sheet does not survive the meter, the listening can't save it.
Audible improvement
Where measurement is harder (power cables, isolation feet, fancy switches), we run controlled A/B comparisons on the chain and document what we actually hear, with explicit honesty when the answer is "nothing".
Build quality and longevity
Materials, connector reliability, jacket flexibility, expected lifespan. An expensive cable that fails at the termination is a worse buy than a cheap cable that lasts a decade.
Compatibility
Does the accessory work with the gear it claims to - phono cartridge load capacitance, headphone connector compatibility, conditioner outlet count, stand height range. The most expensive piece is useless if it does not fit.
Value and honesty
Whether the price reflects materials and engineering, or marketing. The lowest-scored pieces in this category are the ones whose price tag has no relationship to what the data and listening tests show.
How to read the scores: Accessories are scored on the same 0-10 rubric as everything else, but the bar is calibrated to the category. A 9.0 accessory is something the chain genuinely benefits from across multiple system configurations - a Synergistic Research PowerCell-class piece. A 7.0 accessory does what it claims; an accessory below 6.0 either fails its own claims or asks more money than the audible benefit justifies.
We do not score accessories by what the reviewer wants to believe. Mains conditioners that quietly do nothing in a clean electrical environment get the verdict they earned; cables that meet their spec sheet on the meter and disappear in A/B get the verdict they earned. Wishful listening is not a methodology.

Do audiophile cables actually make a difference?
For interconnects below ~3 m at line level - vanishingly small audible difference between properly-built cables. For speaker cables - gauge and length matter (covered by the cable calculator), brand mostly does not. For phono cables - capacitance is real and audible, covered by the cable capacitance tool. For power cables - audible differences are extremely controversial under blind testing.
Are headphone pads worth replacing?
Often yes. Pads are a wear item - foam compresses, leather cracks, the seal degrades, and the seal is what determines bass extension. Replacing flagship-headphone pads at the manufacturer-recommended interval (1-3 years of regular use) restores measured frequency response. Aftermarket pads from Dekoni and similar can also re-tune the sound, sometimes for the better, sometimes not.
How important is room acoustic treatment?
For speakers - critical. Most rooms have 6-12 dB peaks and nulls in the bass and harsh first reflections that smear imaging. Bass traps in corners, broadband absorption at first reflection points, and a rug between speakers and chair give a bigger sound improvement than upgrading any single component. Do speaker stands matter?
For bookshelf speakers - yes, a lot. Tweeter height should land within 6 inches of seated ear level for proper imaging. Stands should be heavy and rigid; light hollow stands resonate and smear midrange. Spike or decouple to the floor depending on the floor type. Bad stand placement easily wastes 50% of a speaker's potential.
Is power conditioning worth the money?
In quiet electrical environments (single-family homes far from industry, on a clean dedicated circuit) - usually no audible benefit. In noisy environments (apartments, offices with switching power supplies, near factories or solar inverters) - real benefit, especially for high-gain phono stages and tube amps. Test rather than assume; differences are environment-dependent.
